Dr. AARON YAU

A Word from Dr. Aaron Yau:

“On Victoria Day, at the age of 7, I had a horse riding accident that caused a suborbital floor fracture in my right eye, resulting in the need for surgery and extensive PTSD counseling and vision therapy. So, I have some idea of how scary it can be when your vision and mind don’t behave the way they used to. I started developing myopia at the age of 7, which resulted in a -8.00D prescription by the age of 21, so I know what it’s like to only see blur and color. At the age of 22, I underwent LASIK, which resulted in severe chronic dry eye despite the 0.8% risk, so I can relate to those who are interested in a life without glasses but are worried about the risks.

My philosophy as a doctor is: ‘To simply treat everyone as family, discuss their ocular health, and provide the best personalized solutions and care.’

My goal is to be different, to sit down and patiently discuss your ocular health, and offer personalized solutions and care. To ensure the options for treatment or care are carefully explained, and you understand your condition and the importance of any testing and follow-up.

Being raised in an Asian household with limited English and as the oldest child in the family, I’ve experienced the confusion and anxiety associated with language barriers, when doctors don’t explain results clearly, or when I have small questions but the doctor is rushing to his next patient. All my life, I’ve dealt with and am still dealing with blurriness, advancing myopia, double vision concerns, and dryness, and I want to show patients that there are doctors willing to sit down to plan out a partnered solution with them.”

BCLA MYOPIA MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE AND ORTHOKERATOLOGY (ORTHO-K)

Congratulations for Dr. Sal for being part of the first 17 Optometrists globally to have passed the advanced exams for Myopia Management.

Dr. Sal has a special interested in Myopia Control for kids aged 6-16 years old using a special contact lens designed to shape the front surface of the eye and reduce the progression of myopia. Myopia is now the The Biggest Eye Health Threat of the 21st Century. We now know from the World Health Organization; the rate of myopia prevalence has doubled over the past 20 years. By 2050, half of the world’s population is projected to be myopic – and 1 billion are expected to have high myopia.

The benefits of these of myopia control include, but are not limited to:

  • Better quality of life
  • Reducing the strength of future glasses prescription
  • Reducing the risk of sight threatening conditions (i.e. glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment, etc.)
  • Reducing dependability on glasses when older

This treatment uses specially designed retainers to reshape the front surface of the eye (the cornea) to reduce the progression of myopia (nearsightedness). The retainers are only worn at night while sleeping. This process is often referred to as orthokeratology. The lenses allow for clear, lens free vision during the day and are designed specifically with the goal of reducing the rate of progression of myopia. It does this by changing how light is focused in the back for the eye.
